Born in Florence in 1835, Emilio Zocchi studied under Torrini and Costalli. He sculpted busts, bas-reliefs and statuettes of Mythological, Classical and Renaissance figures.

A sculptor, painter, architect and poet, he is the leading artist of the High Renaissance. The rebuilding of St Peter's and the decoration of the Sistine Chapel, such as the Last Judgement on the east wall, assured him fame and honours.
