Lot Essay

Born in Florence in 1835, Emilio Zocchi studied under Torrini and Costalli. He sculpted busts, bas-reliefs and statuettes of Mythological, Classical and Renaissance figures.

Born near Florence in 1474, Michelangelo Buonarrotti (d. 1564), better known by his first name, Michelangelo, was apprenticed to Ghirlandio and enjoyed the patronage of both Lorenzo de' Medici and the Pope. A sculptor, painter, architect and poet, he is the leading artist of the High Renaissance. The rebuilding of St Peter's and the decoration of the Sistine Chapel, such as the Last Judgement on the east wall, assured him fame and honours.

Another example of this model was sold in these rooms, 26 October 2000, lot 108, £41,125. Another version is now in the Galleria Palatina, Palazzo Pitti, Florence.
