Lot Essay

Charles Wilson Lambton (1818-1831) was the son of John George Lambton M.P. and later Earl of Durham.

Master Lambton was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1825 and is considered one of Sir Thomas Lawrence's most iconic images. The sobriquet 'The red boy' invokes comparison with Gainsborough's 'Blue boy'.
