A Negoro Lacquer Sake Bottle (Heishi)
Muromachi period (15th-16th century)
Of turned and assembled wood, with upright splayed base, tapered body and rounded shoulders, the neck also tapered and rising to a rounded lip, the underlayer of black lacquer showing through the red outerlayer in random patches, particularly at the edges of the shoulders, neck and lip; inscribed on the inset black-lacquer base in red lacquer with the Chinese character tama (treasure)
