[HAWORTH, Adrian Hardy (1767-1833), John BURRELL and others (contributors)] - Transactions of the Entmological Society of London. London: printed for The Society by Richard Taylor & Co., sold by Thomas Underwood, [1807-]1812.

Volume I (all published), 8° (204 x 128mm). 10 hand-coloured etched plates (8 by and after J.P. Neale, 2 unsigned). (The ninth plate shaved at outer margin affecting image area.) Late-19th-century black half cloth (spine slightly faded and discoloured). Provenance: Lionel George Higgins (label, als from Arthur Lisney to Higgins loosely inserted, dated 17 November 1952, concerning the book).

'THIS IS AN EXCEEDINGLY RARE ITEM' (Lisney writing in 1952, see loosely inserted letter): no copies are listed as having sold at auction in the past twenty-five years. The majority of the volume is taken up by two articles: the first by Haworth (pp.1-69) is a valuable and early review of individual entomologists and their publications: starting with Thomas Mouffet and his publication of 1634 and concluding with George Shaw's contemporary works. The second article is by John Burrell and forms 'A Catalogue of Insects found in Norfolk' (see pp.101-240). This work was originally published in three parts and is the only publication from the society which was formed by ex-members of the dissolved 'Aurelian Society'. The society seems to have ceased to exist in about 1833, when another group took up the name. BM(NH) II,p.534 (calling for 9 plates); cf. Nissen ZBI 4784 (9 plates).
