Lot Essay
Comparable in style to such others of Ryckaert's works of this period as the Rugged landscape with Gypsies in the Bredius Museum, The Hague (inv. no. 199) or the Landscape with hunters by a stream sold, Sotheby's, New York, 20 May 1993, lot 20. These later works reveal the diverse influences acting on Ryckaert through his career, from his teacher, Tobias Verhaecht, to Paul Bril (compare with the more Italianate Landscape with Goatherds by a waterfall in W. Bernt, Die Niederländischen Maler des 17. Jahrhunderts, Munich, 1948, III, no. 710, illustrated), Jan Breughel I and even Roelandt Saverij (from his Tyrolean landscapes, for example the Deer by a rocky waterfall of circa 1609; see K.J. Müllenmeister, Roelant Savery, Freren, 1988, p. 216, no. 52, illustrated).
