Lot Essay

The cabinet's triumphal-arched pedment reflects the George II 'Roman' style popularised by architectural publications such as James Gibbs' Book of Architecture, 1728 and B. Langley's Treasury of Designs, 1740. A drawing of an urn-capped cabinet of this pattern survives amongst the London drawings made in the 1720s by a Russian cabinet-maker (F. Martynov, 'A Russian Master Cabinet-Maker', Furniture History, 1994, p. 95, fig. 2).
