Lot Essay

In 1945 the artist's sister, Molly, acquired a house at 102 Abbey Road in North West London. Dillon moved in as a tennant converting the basement into a flat which had its own independant entrance. He was to live and paint here on and off for the next twenty years. In this work, there is a Van Gogh type still life of an interior centred by an irregular shaped chair, an image he also uses in Self contained flat which was acquired by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland in 1955. This picture now hangs in the Ulster Museum and Art Gallery.
