A carbon copy of a police statement by John Lennon and Yoko Ono, April, 1971, the typescript document in Spanish concerning accusations by Ono's second husband, Tony Cox, of the alleged kidnapping of Yoko Ono's daughter, Kyoko Cox, in Majorca, Spain, signed in blue ballpoint pen by John Lennon and two others; accompanied by a contact sheet of approximately 29 negatives, various shots include: Tony Cox leaving the police station with Kyoko, Tony and Melinda Cox inside the police station, John and Yoko inside and outside the station -- 11¾x8¼in. Lot Essay

When Yoko Ono divorced her second husband, Tony Cox, the issue of the custody of their daughter, Kyoko, was unresolved. When Yoko married Lennon in 1968, an increasingly bitter custody battle ensued. On 23rd April, 1971, John and Yoko were questioned by the Spanish police in Majorca over the alleged abduction of Kyoko - apparently, Cox had complained to the police after Kyoko had gone missing from her school playground. In fact, the statement in this lot reveals that John and Yoko admitted taking Kyoko from the school and back to their hotel, with the intention of trying to resolve the custody situation with Cox. In an interview with Playboy magazine, January, 1981, Yoko admits ...we did kidnap her and went to court. The court did a very sensible thing - the judge took her into a room and asked her which one of us she wanted to go with. Of course, she said Tony. We had scared her to death...

Following this incident, Cox disappeared with Kyoko and the Lennons set off for New York where they suspected Cox had taken her. New York soon became the Lennons' permanent home and in the 1981 Playboy interview, Lennon appealed to Cox to resolve the situation once and for all...We chased him all over the world. God knows where he went. So if you're reading this, Tony, let's grow up about it. It's gone. We don't want to chase you anymore, because we've done enough damage...
