Lot Essay

This Self Portrait shows Leighton in Academic robes with the gold medal of the president of the Academy in his breast with a section of the cast from the Elgin marbles that he had in his studio in Holland Park Road. Another copy by the same hand is in the town hall of Scarborough, where Leighton was born.
