Lot Essay

Accompanied by République et Canton de Neuchâtel Observatoire Astronomique et Chronométrique duplicata of the Bulletin de Marche dated 16 January 1940, Jules Jürgensen Certificate dated February 1940 and original Jules Jürgensen Corporation New York City invoice No. B 5074 dated 20 March 1940. The invoice confirms the sale of the present watch, especially made for Mr. Henry Graves Jr., back of case engraved with coat of arms and First Class Certificate of Neuchâtel, to Mr. Henry Graves Jr., New York, for the amount of US$ 561.00.

It is furthermore delivered with a copy of the worksheet and the original fitted wooden presentation box numbered 15954, containing a spare silvered dial with blue Arabic numerals and subsidiary seconds, spare crystal and hands.

The present watch was custom-made for Henry Graves Jr., a banker and passionate watch collector in New York City, who was a regular customer of the Jürgensen manufacture. Mr. Graves also possessed a range of highly complicated watches signed by Patek Philippe (see previous lot).

According to the worksheet, the movement of the present watch was manufactured in 1908 and finished only in 1938 when it was cased to Mr. Henry Graves Jr.'s specifications given to Jürgensen's New York City branch.

The watch was presented at the 1939 Neuchâtel Observatory Rating Contest for Pocket Chronometers where it obtained a First Class rating certificate.
