In 1971 Smart exhibited Motel Swimming Pool and this study along with Housing Project No. 84 and Waiting Woman, Naples Turn-off at the Macqurie Galleries, Sydney. Although the purity of abstraction had been an interest of Smart's, it was this exhibition that saw the artist using the even regular flat patterning for the first time. Jeffrey Smart describes the direct influence for these works: "I was travelling on the long haul flight Sydney-Bangkok and the woman alongside me had a small tapestry frame and was forming an image from a lot of coloured knots, something like squares, and it led me to Housing Project" (J Smart, Jeffrey Smart Retrospective, Sydney, 1999, p. 120)
