Lot Essay

In 1999, Yoshitomo Nara was included in the Takashi Murakami-curated exhibition/publication/manifesto Superflat. Nara's alternate world, influenced by the world of Japanese comics and animation, has its own cast of mischeivous characters that vacillate between menacing and terminally cute. Little Star Message falls in the latter category. However, Nara depicts the young girl with a "hand in the cookie jar look", concealing her hands, which may allude to a dangerous suprise yet to be discovered.
