Details
LADY (JEAN) CONAN DOYLE

Autograph manuscript, a course of reading devised for her by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle [according to a note by Adrian Conan Doyle], n.d., 49 pages, folio, plus blanks, vellum boards;
[and]
Sir Arthur CONAN DOYLE. Autograph manuscript, 'A Synopsis of Geology By A.B.U. Synan. for the use of J', n.d., including a comic sketch, 'Perilous Position of our Grand-dad' trapped between two crocodiles, 23 pages, 8vo, plus blanks, in a notebook.

Jean Conan Doyle's reading course begins with ten works by her husband, including The White Company, A Duet and The Great Boer War, but not either Sherlock Holmes or Brigadier Gerard; and also works by George Meredith, Thomas Hardy, J.M. Barrie (2), Charlotte Bronte (4), Emily Bronte, Mrs Gaskell, E.W. Hornung (2), Kipling, H.G. Wells, R.L. Stevenson, Thomas Carlyle (2), Boswell, Pepys, and others more obscure; Jean Conan Doyle records her reactions to a number of the books. The 'Synopsis of Geology' is a lucid primer on the subject; the given author's name is presumably a joke. (2)
