Still life with dahlias and chrysanthemums was probably painted in 1925, which was a particularly productive year for Gertler. He wrote to S.S. Koteliansky, 'The last two days I have been absorbed in painting flower pieces ... one each day which means painting all day with hardly a stop. I have just finished my second' (letter dated 22 August 1925).
Andrew Causey comments, 'Gertler seems affectionate towards his subjects, treating them with a concreteness that suggests real feeling ... The culture that Gertler's paintings evoke is not so much pre-industrial or rural as that of the Victorian front room, with its aspidistra and ornaments, a place not for regular living but for special occasions and display' (Camden Arts Centre, Exhibition catalogue, Mark Gertler Paintings and Drawings, Northampton, 1992, pp. 25-6).
