ROMMEL, Erwin. Autograph letter signed ("Erwin") to his wife ("Dearest Lu"), in ink on his African correspondence card imprinted with his name and rank, 25 June 1943. 8vo, 2 pages. In German.
"THE SITUATION IN THE EAST IS SO TENSE THAT IT MIGHT EXPLODE ANY DAY!"
A personal letter with a few remarks on the war situation: "Dearest Lu! Very best thanks for your nice letter of June 24th and for sending me the slippers and face cloth. The latter was already replaced from remaining stock. In regards to our brother, this is more than questionable. I expect on the basis of a written statement that I shall be ordered to meet with the Leader, and moreover, the situation on the South is so tense, that it might explode any day. Then, next, I will have to look for Mr. Markl, which is feasible. If not, then later. What has become of your plans for a trip here? If Manfred (Rommel's son) comes into the camp, then this is very likely to be realized. Best regards and kisses to both of you. Your Erwin." When this letter was written Rommel was attending Hitler's war conference at the Berghof. Rommel had been defeated in the second Battle of el-Alamein in October 1942 and was ordered in March 1943 to return to Germany. Hitler appointed Rommel as commander of Army Group B, to organise resistance in Italy. The following year Rommel was in command of the defense of the French channel coast against a possible Allied invasion.
