1928 ROLLS-ROYCE PHANTOM I NEWMARKET CONVERTIBLE SEDAN
COACHWORK BY BREWSTER
Registration No. DS 7213
Chassis No. S379 KP
Engine No. 20798
Cream over brown with cream leather interior.
Engine: six cylinder in two blocks of three, overhead valves, 7,668cc; Gearbox: four speed manual; Brakes: four wheel drum, servo assisted; Suspension: front, semi-elliptic leaf springs, rear, cantilever leaf springs. Left hand drive.
For the model history please refer to the previous Lot.
The American Rolls-Royce was always offered with custom-built coachwork, the best known coachbuilder being Brewster of New York. They had been absorbed by Rolls-Royce in 1926, the year in which the 'New Phantom' was introduced.
The Newmarket design offers the advantage of a high-quality locking hood mechanism coupled with windows which wind up out of the doors, thus giving a high level of comfort and weather protection, should the weather turn inclement.
This example was purchased at an auction in Monaco in Summer 1989 and has resided in the collection since then.
When purchased the car was found to be in poor mechanical order and subsequently underwent a restoration of the engine, which necessitated the replacement of the sump with a similar unit from another Rolls-Royce. Since then the car has remained in usable order and is presented as such today.
Cosmetically the car has aged well, its paintwork although nearly 20 years old is still in good order, though bears a few minor chips caused through use. The most noticeable detail fault that was found when inspected by a Christie's specialist was that the wood veneers were lifting in some localised places.
Today, on balance the Rolls-Royce represents versatile ideal all-weather touring car.
