Lot Essay

The authenticity of this work has been confirmed by Gisèle Ollinger-Zinque and will be included in the revised catalogue raisonné under no. 419 Bis.

This work is a preparatory drawing for the first illustration in Khnopff's series of sixteen works designed to illustrate a literary text by Henry Carton de Wiart, a Belgian politician, published in 1909. The finished work is in the Cabinet des Estampes, Bibliothèque Royale Albert 1er, Brussels.
