ANCIENNE COLLECTION DE JAN ET JOEL MARTEL
Frères jumeaux nés en 1896 à Nantes, ils s'installèrent à Paris dès 1911. Ils étaient très proches des intellectuels et des architectes de leur époque comme Robert Mallet-Stevens, leur voisin, collaborateur et ami ou encore Jean Burkhalter, le beau-frère de Joël. Leur oeuvre sera marquée par cette proximité avec le monde de l'architecture et par la théorie de Matila C. Ghyka sur le nombre d'or, résultant en une constante harmonie des proportions, la pureté et la simplification des formes presque cubistes. Leur créativité explorera tous les domaines, de la sculpture aux bouchons de radiateur, des devantures de boutique au mobilier en passant par l'art sacré à l'occasion de la reconstruction des édifices religieux détruits pendant la Première Guerre Mondiale. Ils travaillèrent aussi toutes les matières, des plus traditionnelles (bois, pierre, marbre) aux plus innovantes tel le plastique, l'acier ou encore l'aluminium. Ils adhérèrent à la Société des Artistes Décorateurs en 1924 puis firent partie des membres fondateurs de l'Union des Artistes Modernes en 1929.
En 1966, Jan mourut dans un accident de voiture et son frère, trop atteint par cette disparition, ne tarda pas à le rejoindre la même année.
Born in 1896 in Nantes, the two twin brothers settled in Paris in 1911 and were very close to the intellectuals and architects of their time like Robert Mallet-Stevens, their neighbour, collaborator and friend, and also Jean Burkhalter, the brother-in-law of Joël. Their work was largely influenced by this proximity with the world of architecture and the theory of Matila C. Ghyka on the 'nombre d'or', resulting in a constant harmony of proportions, the purity and simplifications of the shapes, almost cubist. Their creativity explored all domains, sculpture, car mascots, vitrines, furniture as well as sacred art for the religious buildings destroyed during World War I, but also every material, the most traditional (wood, stone and marble) as well as the most innovant like plastic, steel and aluminium. They joined the Société des Artistes Décorateurs in 1924 and were amongst the foundators of the Union des Artistes Modernes in 1929.
In 1966, Jan died in a car accident and his brother, too much affected by the loss, soon followed him the same year.
