A Black-Lacquer Suit of Armor (Tosei Gusoku)

The thirty-two plate iron suji helmet lacquered black and mounted in shakudo fittings with a five-stage tehen kanamono (decorative ring on the top of the helmet bowl), two plates at the front and rear of the bowl pierced-carved with chrysanthemums and mounted with three shinodare (ornamental metal strips) with high rivets to the front and two to the rear, the peak and fukikaeshi (turnbacks) partly covered with stenciled leather and mounted with gilt sankai-hishi family crests, the helmet fitted with a three-lame iron manju- style ita shikoro (wide neckguard); the black-lacquer bijo mask with a five-lame throat guard; the armor comprising a mogami-style cuirass (horizontal plates, each with individual hinges) in five sections lacquered black and fitted with eight sections of detachable kusazuri (tassets), tsubo sode (jar-shaped shoulder guards), russet-iron tsutsu gote (sleeves) mounted with double-gourd plates inlaid with silver clouds, matching leather kawara haidate (thigh guards) and tsutsu suneate (splint shin guards); the whole armor laced in dark blue in sugake style (vertical lacing) with the ends of each plate laced in leather in hishi-nui (cross-knot) style; some parts edged with copper fukurin (rolled metal edging) with scrolling vines on nanako ground; flag with family crest, bamboo fan with sun and moon, e-boshi hat and decorative accoutrements of fur and gold papers; two armor storage boxes
