Planson attended the Acadèmie Ranson and exhibited with the Sociète Independents in 1923. In 1949 he became a founding member of the Réalité poétique movement, along with Roland Outdot, Maurice Brianchon, and Raymond Jean Legueult, as a reaction to the departure of many artists of the day who shifted to complete abstraction in their art. Planson and the others remained committed to the ideals of the Post-Impressionists with a desire to further explore the influence of intense color in painting (F. Daulte, Les peintres de la Réalité poétique, Genève, 1994).
The present work was painted from Marne-La-Valle, between Paris and Reims. Planson was particularly attracted to this area and the scenic views of the river.
