Lot Essay
Felix Pardo de Tavera, brother of the famous physician and author Trinidad Hermenegildo Pardo de Tavera, was born in Manila in 1859 to a Spanish father and a Creole mother. In Manila he received initial art training, including botanical drawing under the renowned botanist researcher Father Blanco.
Siding with the Filipinos in their struggle for equal rights, Felix and his family went into exile. The family moved to Paris where Felix attended more art courses, including some training under Auguste Rodin, Bouguereau and Benlliure.
Because of the difficulties the de Tavera family experienced going into exile, Felix never returned to the Philippines. Instead, he adopted his wife's country of origin, Argentina, where he became a citizen. He continued to travel between Argentina and Paris. He received a Silver Medal from the Paris Salon in 1889 and Gold Medals in St Louis 1904 and Buenos Aires 1910.
This lot presumably dates from the 1920s during the artist's time in Paris where Almaric Walter's works were being exhibited. Felix died in Paris in 1932.
