Lot Essay

Landseer was fascinated by all aspects of deerstalking. He produced numerous drawings and sketches of highlanders with ponies and dead deer. The present work is a study for Highlanders Returning from Deerstalking, of 1827 (Alnwick Castle, The Duke of Northumberland, see Sir Edwin Landseer, catalogue to the exhibition, Tate Gallery, 1982, no. 29, p72).
For a further note on Landseer and the highlands, please see lot 21.
