Lot Essay

Farquharson's title derives from Robert Burns' poem Where are the Joys. The first stanza reads:

Where are the joys I hae met in the morning,
That danc'd to the lark's early sang?
Where is the peace that awaited my wand'ring
At e'ening the wild-woods amang.

Like much of his work, the picture was executed at Finzean, Farquharson's estate in Aberdeenshire.
