Trained in Antwerp, Paris and at the Slade, Johnstone Douglas had by the 1890s established a reputation as a painter of society portraits. During the First World War he was employed as a painter of 'dazzle ships': the largest single body of his work is now in the collection of the Imperial War Museum, London.
