Lot Essay
A design remarkable for its innovative and cost-efficient use of materials, the Lounge Chair Wood responded fluently to the prevailing currency of biomorphism within the fine arts and design. The first experimental series of LCW lounge chairs were produced in the autumn and winter of 1945, and were exhibited at the Barclay Hotel, December 1945, the Architectural League, February 1946, and the Museum of Modern Art, New York, in March 1946.
The earliest examples of this design featured an electronic welding process to secure the back to the spine. This proved lacking in durability, and so by late 1946 the back was screwed directly to the spine. The back of the example offered confirms its date of manufacture to the very beginning of experimental production. In addition, the chair also featured proportional differences to the examples manufactured from late 1946 onwards, is stamped 1 in several places, and exhibits an atypical assembly for the leg braces.
