Lot Essay

Overstrand was known as the village of Millionaires in the early part of the 20th Century and was a favourite haunt of the rich and famous who built elaborate second homes here. Overstrand Hall was designed for Lord and Lady Hillingdon.

Beatrice Parsons also painted the gardens of The Pleasaunce, another house in Overstrand, built for Lord and Lady Battersea with grounds designed by Gertrude Jekyll, see C. Woods & P. Hobhouse, Painted Gardens, English Watercolours 1859-1914, London, 1988, illustrated, no. 110.
