Lot Essay

Sir William Rothenstein bought Isles Farm at Far Oakridge, Gloucestershire, in 1912. The artist lived there with his wife Alice between 1912 and 1916, and he did not have to stray far into the surrounding countryside for inspiration. The present work is almost certainly a view of Isles Farm executed during that time.

The artist's son, Sir John Rothenstein (1901-1992), was the longest serving Director of the Tate, having held office between 1938 and 1964.
