Lot Essay

In 1878, Jervis McEntee joined Frederic Church on a sketching trip in the Maine woods. McEntee first studied under Church in 1850 at the Art Union Building in New York and in the following years would often accompany fellow artists such as Eastman Johnson, Sanford Robinson Gifford and Worthington Whittredge on summer sketching trips throughout the Northeast and abroad.
