Lot Essay

Lorimer bought Gibliston in 1916 following the death of his mother, furnishing it with many pieces from the prestigious Edinburgh firm Whytock & Reid, and from the local cabinet maker Wheeler of Arncroach. These sober, plain beds reflect the deep held belief of Lorimer that wood "should tell it's own tale". Fine quality timber, solid traditional craftsmanship and classic proportions are among the hallmarks or Lorimer furniture.
At the same time as furnishing Gibliston, Lorimer was working on the restoration of Balmanno Castle in Perthshire, and the two projects show many parallels.
The alteration to the legs was carried out by the National Trust when the beds were briefly at nearby Kellie Castle, once home to Robert Lorimer's elder brother John.
