Following the phenomenal success of his Art Nouveau enamel jewels, Lalique turned his attention to glassmaking around 1910 when he bought the glassworks at Combs-La-Ville. Lalique was able to explore the decorative possibilities offered by glass, its plasticity, translucency, colours and texture. Continuing the themes taken from the Art Nouveau jewellery, his best examples were the fringe necklaces in clear or frosted glass, as illustrated by lot 93 (ref. V. Becker, The Jewellery of Rene Lalique)
