WINTERSCHMIDT, Johann Samuel (1760-c.1824/29). Original drawings for Nürnbergische Flora oder natürliche Abbildung und Beschreibung der in Nürnbergs Umgebung ohne Kultur wachsenden Pflanzen. Nuremberg: J. S. Winterschmidt, 1819-22.
20 drawings in watercolour and black chalk on paper (approx. 185/200 x 116/125mm), signed in ink 'J.S.W. jun. ad viv. pinxit', or a variation thereof, most dated (between 1816-1820) and with identifying caption. Mounted on blue paper. (A few with very light spotting or faintly browned frame-mark.)
Twenty (of 108) original watercolour drawings from nature, depicting flora around Nuremberg. They are the work of the botanist, artist and publisher, J.S. Winterschmidt; in recognition of his service to the field of botany he was elected an honorary member of the Royal Botanical Society at Regensburg. The Nürnbergische Flora was issued in fascicles between 1817 and 1821; three volumes were projected but only 2 volumes and the first fascicule of the third were completed. Even the printed edition is rare, and no copy has been sold at auction - not in Britian, America, or Germany - in over 50 years. The drawings are all signed by the artist and many are dated. In addition, several have pencil annotations, sometimes indicating fascicule and plate number, indicating their use in the final publication. A selection of proof plates of the work from the Winterschmidt archive were sold in these rooms in 2000 (8 November, lot 79). Cf. Nissen BBI 2170; Stafleu & Cowan 18.030. (20)
