SYRIAN, EARLY DYNASTIC PERIOD, CIRCA 2900-2550 B.C.
The bearded figure standing with his hands clasped around a small vessel in prayer before his bare chest, his elbows bent acutely, wearing a long wrap-around belted skirt, the hem with a single row of fringe finely incised, the feet positioned closely together on the integral oval plinth against a back support, the head resting squarely between the broad shoulders, with characteristic prominent nose, the large eyes inlaid with shell, the pupils, outlines and eyebrows preserving traces of dark material, wearing a long rectangular plaited beard, symmetrically flanked by plaits of his center-parted hair
