MINKOWSKI, Hermann (1864-1909). Raum und Zeit. Offprint from: Jahresberichts der deutschen Mathematiker-Vereinung, vol. XVIII (1909). Leipzig and Berlin: B.G. Teubner, 1909.
8° (260 x 179mm). Half-tone frontispiece portrait after Emil Logés, diagrams in the text, final leaf with publisher's advertisements recto and verso for Minkowski's Geometrie der Zahlen and Diophantische Approximationen. (Very light marginal browning, frontispiece lightly spotted.) Original printed wrappers, upper wrapper with printed title (A few light marks and small stains, minor cracks on spine causing small, skilfully-repaired loss).
FIRST SEPARATE PRINTING. THE PAPER WHICH 'INTRODUCED THE NOTION THAT MADE POSSIBLE THE EXPANSION OF THE RELATIVITY THEORY OF EINSTEIN ... FROM ITS SPECIFIC (1905) TO ITS GENERAL FORM' (PMM). 'Raum und Zeit' was read by Minkowski at the conference in Cologne on 21 September 1908, and proposed the four-dimensional space-time continuum; as the opening words state, 'Die Anschauungen über Raum und Zeit, die ich Ihnen entwickeln möchte, sind auf experimentall-physikalischem Boden erwachsen. Minkowski's paper was fundamental to relativity physics because its author 'was the first to conceive that the relativity principle formulated by Lorentz and Einstein led to the abandonment of the concept of space and time as separate entities and to their replacement by a four-dimensional "space-time," of which he gave a precise definition and initiated the mathematical study; it became the frame of all later developments of the theory and led Einstein to his bolder conception of generalized relativity' (DSB IX, p.414). Following Minkowski's unexpected death in 1909, this offprint of his paper from the Jahrsberichts der deutschen Mathematiker-Vereinung, vol. XVIII (1909) was commissioned as a tribute, in accordance with the author's wishes; as A. Gutzmer stated in his foreword to the offprint, 'Das verständnisvolle und begeisterte Interesse, das sein Vortrag erweckt hatte, erfüllte Minkowski mit innerer Befriedigung, und er wünschte, seine Darlegungen durch eine Sonderausgabe weiteren Kreisen zugänglich zu machen'. Norman 1514. Cf. PMM 401 (Jahrsberichts issue).
