Lot Essay

This artist was a friend of Renoir and persuaded officials to admit Monet into the Salon. A student of Cabanel and Fromentin, he showed his work for lengthy periods at the Salon, and was made Commandeur de la Légion d'honneur. He illustrated Balzac's 'La fille aux yeux d'or'. His work is found in many French museums including the Louvre.
