This extraordinary collection comprising over 1700 images, is contained in almost all his original itemised albums and boxes, hand-annotated and captioned, each image having an individual contact print for ease of identification. The quiet, shy and enigmatic Robert Fellowes was noted for his ability to encapsulate fleeting moments in time on film, having that expert eye for composition and content; but clearly moreover, as his pictures imply, he had incredible access to his subject due in no small part to his family connections with the motor racing fraternity, especially Richard Seaman. Through this contact, he had the perfect credentials to mingle with the racing teams and the drivers, of whom many were became personal friends, some of whom had signed his photographs for him. He travelled extensively through Europe each season, combining work with pleasure, visiting places of interest and holidaying with his friends in between race events. All the well-known names and places are recorded in his photographs, many of which have become iconic over the years. The itinerary over successive seasons took in such evocative locations as Monaco, Spa, Monza, Nürburgring, Montlhèry, Reims, Berne, Pau, Pescara and Picardie, whilst the race names such as Targa Florio, Coppa Acerbo, Eifelrennen, Monte Carlo, Coppa Ciano, to name but a few. One such trip with his friends, in the 1929 ex-TT Team-car Alfa Romeo 1750, for instance, shows what fun it must have been on the open roads of Europe in the mid-1930s; breaking the travelogue to meet up with the racing circus at these wonderful events, which attracted hundreds of thousands of eager spectators and were truly great pageants where the mighty Titans did battle during this 'Golden age' of Grand Prix racing. But it is his attention to detail which single him out from the crowd; his ability to gain trackside access, sometimes almost appearing to be standing only a few feet from the cars travelling in excess of 100mph, or some elevated vantage point which give his pictures an added charisma. His studies of individual drivers, clearly show their techniques, as much as his own, making them so characteristic and identifiable. The quality and definition of many of these can be shown by some of the enlarged prints, and many of his negatives yet remain unseen by the public at large. The recent book produced by Chris Nixon, shows the quality of his work, but the true depth of his talent is still latent within this extraordinary collection. Here is presented an unrepeatable opportunity to acquire this unique photographic record of that bygone era. The Following lots comprise the Robert Fellowes Archive
