Mrs M. Partridge's Sprig, with Ted Leader up, is shown winning from Mr G.W. Pennington's Bovril III, owner up, and Mr S. Sandford's Bright's Boy, J.R. Anthony up. Sprig, a chestnut gelding, was by Marco out of Spry. He was a sturdy dependable type of horse who finished fourth on two other occasions, in 1925 and 1926. As in 1926, Sprig was the favorite in 1927 with odds of 8/1. He was described as 'a big muscular chestnut, with a rather common but wise looking head, and was just the clever, balanced type of jumper that is dependable at Aintree.' (D. Hoadley Munroe, The Grand National, New York, 1931, p. 120). Ted Leader was one of the leading jockeys of the day.
