Lot Essay

Trafalgar House was the name given to the mansion of Standlynch, which had been bought by a grateful nation in 1814 and bestowed on the 1st Earl Nelson, brother of the victor at the Battle of Trafalgar. The Nelson family retained Trafalgar House until its sale in 1947, and its contents were used to furnish various houses, including Normanswood in Surrey, the residence of Edward, 5th Earl Nelson of Trafalgar.
The stamps to the underside of this elegant dressing-table refer to Antoine-Nicolas Lesage (1784 - 1841), established in the rue Grange-Batelière between 1821 and 1837, who was one of the most important marchands of his period. Two related dressing tables by Lesage are illustrated in D. Ledoux-Lebard, Le Mobilier Français du XIXeme Siècle, Paris, 1989, p. 430.
