Lot Essay

Egyptian winged sphynx of similar character featured on chenets provided by the Parisian fabricants de bronzes Pierre-François Feuchere (d.1823) and Lucien-François Feuchere (P. Verlet, Les Bronzes Dores Francais du XVIIIe Siècle, pp.218 and 219).
The treatment, however, of this pair of candelabra is characteristic of the Lombard decorative bronze production of early 19th century. The work relates to the neo-classical interpretation of the Milanese ornemaniste Giocondo Albertolli (plates XIX and XX of his Ornamenti diversi, published in Milan in 1782), as well as to other ornamental bronze designs of one of Albertolli's student, Luigi Canonica, who was active at the beginning of the 19th Century (E. Colle, A. Griseri, R. Valeriani, Bronzi decorativi in Italia, Milan, 2001, pp. 244-246).
