His father Menso was a painter, his mother a musician and Floris Verster one of his uncles. As a pupil of his father, Harm started painting in 1912. Soon after he made his first acquaintance with the work of Vincent van Gogh and the later luminist movement, which made a deep impact on him. It prompted him to change his style into a more expressionistic one, resulting in brighter colours and loose brush strokes. During his life Harm Kamerlingh Onnes was a member of various artists societies. As a member of society De Sphinx, he and his friend J.J.P. Oud, met Theo van Doesburg, who introduced them to the ideas and artists of De Stijl. Kamerlingh Onnes preferred to be a story teller, painting anecdotal, humorous works in his very own style. Dat genknoei van mij (my messing around), as he used to call his work, consists of paintings, drawings, pastels, watercolours and stained glass windows. He also designed stamps and was a ceramist. The artist remains most famous for his amusing genre scenes, which he called 'pantomimes'.
