Lot Essay

In 1859 Cole painted and sold The Warren, Albury Heath, an oil on canvas measuring 20 x 30 in., to the London art dealer Arthur Tooth. It is probable that the present picture is a slightly later version of the same composition.

Albury Heath is in Surrey, and although Cole was living in Kensington by this time, he made his name as a landscape painter, depicting views in Surrey, Hampshire, Sussex, Cornwall and Wales.
We are grateful to Dr Timothy Barringer for his help in preparing this catalogue entry.
