FIRST EDITIONS. Kratzenstein, a Danish physician and scientist, describes his recreation of Leibnitz's calculating machine that he presented before members of the Imperial Academy of Sciences in St. Petersburg in 1762. The sole example of Leibnitz's calculating machine built in 1674 was lost shortly afterward, and not found again until 1879. Thus during the 18th century the machine's design had to be inferred from written models and illustrations. Kratzenstein's machine may be unknown except for its description in this book.
