[IBM]. The Origins of Cyberspace collection includes a significant number of important items relating to IBM and its predecesor C-T-R and The Tabulating Machine Company division. A number of the pamphlets that follow in this series describe some of the very wide range of IBM electric punched-card accounting machines available after World War II. Some of these could be programmed by wiring plugboards. These punched-card tabulators were the core of IBM's business until they were gradually replaced by electronic digital computers toward the end of the 1950s and into the 1960s. Their service approach resulted in very high sales and customer loyalty.
Reflecting the size of the electric tabulating business, IBM published a very large number of brochures and manuals for different purposes. The following are representative examples. The last of these brochures specifically on IBM card-tabulating machines is dated 1956. As you will see if you scan this listing of IBM publications presented in chronological order, IBM introduced its first electronic digital computer, based on the Princeton IAS machine, in 1952. It continued to lease and service electronic card tabulators well into the 1960s, until electronic computers finally replaced this tabulating technology. Most of this has become very difficult to find.
