SUSSEX, Prince Augustus Frederick, Duke of (1773-1843) -- Thomas Joseph PETTIGREW (1791-1865). Bibliotheca Sussexiana. Original boards, green cloth spines with printed paper labels, uncut (some light wear and soiling); green cloth folding cases. Provenance: W. Foreman Esq. (presenation inscription).
PRESENTATION COPY BY PETTIGREW OF ONE OF THE FEW LARGE-PAPER COPIES. INSCRIBED one month before his death on the half-title in vol. I: "To W. Foreman Esq., as a small tribute of great regard & high esteem from his most attached friend T.J. Pettigrew the Author. One of a very few privately printed on Large Paper. Oct. 23, 1865." The Duke of Sussex, the sixth son of King George III, formed this celebrated collection of Bibles. Part I of Vol. I describes 403 manuscripts of biblical and other religious texts in Hebrew, Greek, Latin and European and Oriental languages, Part II 392 printed editions of the Bible and its parts, foremost among them a copy of the Gutenberg Bible on paper (now in Austin, University of Texas), and the 1462 Bible on vellum. Vol. II, published twelve years later, contains more than eleven hundred editions in roughly sixty languages. (3)
