WHATMAN, James I, II, & III -- Catalogue of the Library at Vintner's in Kent. London: Privately Printed by Levery, Robson & Franklyn, 1841.
4o (280 x 218 mm). Interleaved with 127 ff., containing numerous additions, often on both sides, in three different hands. Contemporary blind-ruled calf, smooth spine without lettering.
The probably unique copy of the privately printed catalogue of the considerable family library, formed by the creator of the "Whatman Paper" (d. 1798), his son (d. 1843) and his grandson (all three called James); the last sold the library at Christie's in 1887. It is arranged according to key words ("Abyssinia" to "Yorkshire"). From 1840 to at least 1883, the last date of a book added, it received numerous accessions which three different hands entered on the printed pages or the interleavings which also brought the excellent index (37 pp.) up to date. The catalogue is very rare. The BL copy is catalogued under "Vintner's," as the compiler was unaware of the owners' name (which does not appear in the catalogue).
