BERNARD, Charles (1650-1711) -- Jacob HOOKE. Bibliotheca Bernardiana: or, a Catalogue of the Library of the Late Charles Bernard, Esq. London: Thomas Ballard?, 22 March 1710-1711.

8o (159 x 95 mm). Early 19th-century calf gilt, edges gilt, by C. Smith (some minor wear). Provenance: C. Sturges (contemporary signature on title); Thomas Frognall Dibdin (1776-1847, bookplate; his note on flyleaf: "P.186, see the Spaccio of Jordano (sic) Bruno sold for 20£, mentioned by The Spectator. The whole sold for £1212"; his sale 1817, lot 10).

PRICED in a contemporary hand. This auction was conducted at the Black-Boy Coffee House, which lead the British Library list of English Book Sales to attribute Thomas Ballard as the auctioneer, probably on the strength that he conducted several other sales at this venue between 1709-11. Charles Bernard was one of the preeminent surgeons of his time and was appointed Queen Anne's principal surgeon on her ascension in 1702. His sale contained 1,001 lots of medical, surgical, anatomical and botanical works.
