Six parts bound in two, large 8o (232 x 162 mm). Engraved frontispiece portrait inserted in Vol. I (from Pettigrew's 1827 catalogue). 19th-century brown half morocco gilt, uncut, edges gilt. Provenance: Lord Aldenham (1819-1907; bookplate); Henry Hucks Gibbs (signature and purchase note on flyleaf); another owner's signature and name on bookplate deleted.

"The six sales...produced but a small portion of what he had spent on them...because they took place in the years when prices were at their lowest. The two biggest buyers were Sir Thomas Phillipps and the British Museum" (De Ricci). Part I offered the Bibles (the Gutenberg and 1462 Bibles realized £190 and £170 respectively), II the MSS, III History & Topography, IV Greek Classics, Foreign History, &c., V Poetry, Drama, &c., VI miscellaneous books, but including Caxton's 'Cathon', 1483 (£16.10.0).
