Moerl was deacon of St. Aegidius and St. Sebald in Nuremberg, and in 1773 became Nuremberg City Librarian; in the latter position he succeeded his father Gustav Philipp (1673-1750). The collection included the Subiaco Lactantius, (262 Gulden), the highest price of the sale, the Fust & Schöffer Cicero on vellum (250 Gulden), 40 early manuscripts and 157 incunabula.
