Lot Essay

Merle was a student of L.Cogniet. He exhibited at the Salon from 1847-1880. He received second class medals from 1861-1863 and was made Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur in 1866. His works have been conserved by The Luxembourg Museum, The Wallace Collection in London, The Municipal Museum in Amsterdam and the Metropolitan Museum in New York.
