We would like to thank Alexandra Murphy for identifying this work as the possible preliminary study for Picou's 'Sauve qui Peut' which was shown at the Salon of 1874.

Lot Essay

A student under Delaroche at the Academy de Beaux-Arts, he studied with Gleyre and Gérôme and was awarded the Prix de Rome in 1853. He showed his work at the Salon from 1847. He undertook projects to paint elaborate frescos for the church of Saint-Roch in Paris and for Notre-Dame-du-Bon Secours at Nantes. Other works are exhibited at the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Nantes
