8o (93 x 121mm). Collation: A-B8 (B8 half title); 3 etched plates: poet's portrait (by J. Daullé), typefoundry, printing shop. Contemporary Parisian binding of gold-tooled red morocco, triple fillet on sides, ARMS OF NICOLAS-RENé BERRYER (1703-62; Olivier 296, this block not reproduced), spine tooled in compartments, colored gilt-blocked floral endpapers imported from Augsburg or Nuremberg, gilt edges. Slipcase. Provenance: N.-R. Berryer (binding), patronized by Madame de Pompadour, lieutenant-general of police 1747-57, subsequently minister of the Marine 1758, and of Justice 1761 -- Jackson Burke (bookplate).

Second edition of the Latin poem, FIRST EDITION of the French translation. ASSOCIATION COPY from the library of the chief of the Paris police, who controlled censorship and licensed the printing of this edition. The paper is noticeably thicker than usual and this copy may therefore have been printed on special paper (and bound) for presentation to the most powerful official under Louis XV concerning the printing and publishing trade.
